retest - Chumly as a platform for collaboration

Just a couple of days ago, some of us 'oldtimers' here at  www.Chumly.com began sharing stories on how and why we ended up here and why we decided to stay on, eventually forming the team of colleagues and friends that we are today.

One of us - our CIO, Alex - brought back to our attention the fact that 99% of the work we've done to move Chumly from a rather shaky pre-alpha release in january 2010 to the great product we are now able to present, has been done using that very same product.

The alpha - or at least the idea behind it - was so strong that we could use it as our platform for collaboration from day 1. And of course, this platform has evolved side by side with the site itself. We created groups to be able to discuss delicate matters in private. We shared files, documents, screenshots.. You name it, we sent it.

And this is still one of the functions of Chumly that came about pretty much unintentionally. Because we weren't trying to create a site for collaboration on project. Had it been so, we would've probably tried to become Google Wave instead of Chumly. Chumly Wave... ;)

I think what Alex pointed out to us with his mention of the collaborative power of Chumly, was that not even we - the guys and gals behind the curtain - are able to fully grasp the enormous potential of our creation.

From time to time we just stop, look around and say "WOW! I didn't know we could do that!"

I wonder what you would say after spending some time at  www.chumly.com?

Pluto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

another example of how science gets created to keep the old mold. [If you allowed Pluto and similar objects to be classified as planets it would throw the whole 'accretion disk' formation of the solar system into question.] http://chum.ly/n/3f7e69

Post from johnwm at CHUM.LY

Some of you might have heard about the Fair Tax initiative in the U.S. It has been attempted every year since the late 90's, and was started by some folks in Texas, because it seemed like our present tax system was getting way out of hand. I just received an email from  FairTax.org www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer and it happened to contain a picture now running in papers around the U.S. that very clearly explains the concept. (There is a lot of mis-information from detractors who would like to see the current plan kept in place, or who want to use it as a scare tactic to defeat a political opponent. I think that if the word gets out so that people truly understand it, the use as a political weapon will backfire.)

Here is the picture.

What's hot in space? - ComputerworldUK.com

 www.computerworlduk.com/slideshow/public-sector/32...space

Here is pretty good visual proof of James McCanney's contention that even planets have comet-like tails, which he explains is evidence of discharging the electrical potential buildup between the sun (net negatively charged) and a positive potential buildup that exists beyond pluto (due to the solar wind). According to McCanney the tail (of comets and other charged bodies moving in the solar system) is actually flowing into the side of the planet/comet opposite the sun, and adds mass, including hydrocarbons and water to the planet/comet, from recombination of elements in the ionized plasma that forms the 'tail'. [His theories about comets have been verified over the years by a number of NASA probes, but they still say that comets are dirty snowballs effervescing in the heat of the sun...

When several planets are 'in alignment', there are direct consequences to the amount of discharge and solar flaring. I wonder if NASA is calling the coming year the Year of the Solar System because they are about to have a coming out party to start 'discovering' what McCanney has held to be 'the way things work' since the 70s. For instance, they might stop saying the comets are dirty snowballs. They might even take the really big step and admit that there are massive electrical affects taking place on the surface of the sun that propagate through the solar system with direct consequences to earth weather. For instance, did you know that there is what McCanney calls the 'August Return Sheet', a location in our solar system through which earth passes during the month of August, where there is a natural discharge flow of positive potential from the outer positive buildup back to the sun.

You can read more about McCanney's theories at  jmccanneyscience.com http://chum.ly/n/3be3f7

Good morning all - whatever time of day it is for you.

We've just added a new capability in the 2nd page of user registration and similarly on your Profile settings page; you may now provide links to up to 10 sites or pages that are important to you, and give each of them a title. These will appear near the bottom of your Profile page. Alex and I worked out some of the kinks yesterday, and we thinks it works ok. Try it and give some feedback / opinion. http://chum.ly/n/3b13fb

Hi, seoweather.. and welcome to Chum.ly. If you have any questions about the way things work, just post and one of us here will try to answer.

It looks like you are putting together an interesting weather site with a lot of links to useful weather info, but not quite all plugged in yet. I followed a lot of links but never actually got to any real weather info. Maybe I just chose the wrong links. Or, based on the name of your web site it is an experiment to determine if a lot of links can actually bring that site to the top at search engines. It might work, but getting those backends plugged into tangible weather without making the user take too many hops to find their answer will likely be important. http://chum.ly/n/3b1144

Kantian Aesthetics and The Information Highway

The official verdict is out. Surfing the web for relevant content or in the hopes of serendipitous content discovery IS an Aesthetic Experience, period. That is, we are looking for information-objects of beauty. The experience of information serendipity is akin to the sublime in art. I explain.

We are hearing more and more being spoken with regard to relevance, content discovery, and the assuagement of one's information needs. We also hear much on the subject of information noise. What is information noise?

Well, we know what noise is. Currently, our definition of information noise is usually UNWANTED INFORMATION, i.e. unwanted information present in your social stream. So in a sense, YOU are NOISE to me.

That is to say, there are Twitter users whose posts I don't like reading: They are not beautiful, hence they are information pollution / information noise. We even speak of "cleaning" one's Twitter Feed.

So we're speaking of an aesthetic experience, and the way I see it, when we speak of cleaning our social stream, or keeping it tidy, we're really speaking about social standing.

What do I mean by this? What I mean is that we're trying to control what kind of information reaches us, partly by cleaning up what digital channels will NOT reach us. We are choosing kinds of information that we do NOT want to see in our social stream.

In a sense, we are also categorizing PEOPLE in terms of Sound information and Noisy information. We are therefore classifying people as being either Good or Not Good (i.e. Good or not Good FOR ME).

So a different kind of filtering is taking place. We're not just talking about information filtering anymore: We're talking about an aesthetic filtering of PEOPLE, because PEOPLE in the end are attached to these Twitter or Facebook or other accounts.

It's normal to want to control one's "listening station", to get the kinds of information we prefer, and none can doubt that surfing the web for information is a matter of taste. But it becomes an aesthetic problem and a very serious ethical debate arises out of it.

How can I judge a human being as being either informative or as being information noise? I can classify INDIVIDUALS as satisfying my information needs or NOT satisfying my information needs. This is horrible, though, the consequences are terrifying. I can dispose of individuals as though they were garbage, and believe me, the effect is felt. You try being rejected as a POOR SOURCE of information. You will be ignored, rejected, put on the Black List, and you will feel alienated.

So for the most part, this kind of "social filtering" of people is really unethical. We speak of our egalitarian society as righteous and virtuous. Yet we classify and label people as good and not good. Noise, in the digital information channel, is bad. It is UGLY. It is a matter of taste, but when taste labels & judges individuals, it becomes a serious ethical problem of VIOLATION and TRANSGRESSION.

Just as a piece of information that satisfies my information need is seen as RELEVANT and BEAUTIFUL, it also transgresses the norm of what is UGLY and NOISY and NOT USEFUL, or NOT INTERESTING. The same goes for the uninteresting, it violates that value we hold so dear, those values indelibly linked to the labelling of our individual experiences of the Information Highway as beautiful, true, and good.

Yes, we are actually seeking the Good, the Beautiful and the True, and are labelling people this way in the process. But an individual is neither good, nor beautiful, nor true, nor is he or she the opposite of this. Humans are just what they are. They can be annoying, but really when one takes offense, one is usually looking to be offensed.

So this, for me, is the final verdict on the experience of surfing the World Wide Web. It is a matter of aesthetics and aesthetic taste, and a seriously unethical matter of FILTERING PEOPLE as objects of knowledge. And so a question arises with regard to the liberal art of Saving-Face: To put it politely, we're looking for social standing, and the judgment of others, as to our aesthetic beauty, goodness, or truth, is profoundly important to us. Services such as Facebook permit us to gauge the responses others have of us, so it works to keep us in check. Like the Liberal Arts in the 17th and 18th century in England, the Liberal Arts serve a public function of promoting the civic virtues. We are doing the same at present: We are using each other to promote civic virtues. Relevance and Utility have become civic virtues, and others can take on the Face-Wasting role of lacking in civility. More to come on the subject of Face-Saving and Face-Wasting (i.e. The Antiface Strategy).
